Bed sizes are one of those things everyone thinks they know until they are ordering a mattress. Here are the standard UK sizes, and how to pick one for your room.

Standard UK bed sizes

SizeMattress (cm)Feet and inches
Small single75 x 1902ft 6in x 6ft 3in
Single90 x 1903ft x 6ft 3in
Small double120 x 1904ft x 6ft 3in
Double135 x 1904ft 6in x 6ft 3in
King150 x 2005ft x 6ft 6in
Super king180 x 2006ft x 6ft 6in

These are mattress sizes. The bed itself is a bit bigger, especially with a headboard or a chunky frame.

Picking the right size for your room

  • Leave about 60 cm to walk around the sides and foot of the bed.
  • Check that wardrobe doors and drawers can still open.
  • For two people, a double is snug. A king gives you each more room.
  • Taller than about 6 foot? A king or super king is 10 cm longer.
